Ian's Story
Author and Speaker
Ian Lydiard is an Australian author and speaker who writes about leadership, courage,
uncertainty and the decisions that shape a life.
Based in Cairns, North Queensland, Ian writes for people who are trying to move forward
without having every answer. His work draws on business, leadership, public speaking and
the ordinary moments when a person must decide whether to remain where they are or
take the next step.
His book, Forward Anyway: When Certainty Is Absent, is built around a simple idea.
Courage is not the absence of uncertainty. It is the decision to keep moving while
uncertainty is still present.
Business and Leadership Experience
Ian has spent much of his working life dealing with people, listening to their concerns and sitting in rooms where important decisions were made.
His early career included motor vehicle sales, where he learned that people rarely make decisions based on facts alone. Trust, confidence, fear, timing and the way a person is treated often carry just as much weight.
As a business owner and later as a director of a large sporting club, Ian gained firsthand experience in leadership, governance and the quieter behaviour that shapes a meeting.
He saw strong ideas overlooked. He saw silence mistaken for agreement. He also saw how one clear question could expose a problem that others had learned to avoid.
Those experiences became part of the foundation for his writing.
Ian’s work looks closely at what happens when pressure enters a room, confidence drops or someone must make a decision without knowing how others will respond.

Why Ian Wrote Forward Anyway
The first notes for Forward Anyway began at a table while Ian was thinking about what he wanted his children and family to understand about life.
What started as a personal collection of thoughts slowly became something larger. The message was not only for his family. It was for anyone who had delayed a decision while waiting to feel completely ready.
The book was written for people facing change, doubt, disappointment or a future they cannot fully predict.
It does not pretend that fear disappears. Fear often stays close. It can sit beside us when we make the phone call, enter the meeting, begin again or admit that the old plan no longer works.
The task is not always to remove fear. Sometimes the task is to understand it and refuse to let it make every decision.
Ian believes ordinary people are often capable of more than they realise. Yet they can become trapped by hesitation, overthinking and the need for approval.
Progress often begins before confidence arrives.
You can feel uncertain and still act.
You can feel unprepared and still begin.
You can be afraid and still take the next honest step.
Speaking Background
Ian spent several years speaking with Gideons International in churches and community settings.
That experience helped him develop a speaking style that is direct, conversational and easy to understand. He prefers everyday language, honest stories and practical ideas over complicated explanations.
His presentations explore what happens when plans change, confidence disappears, people feel overlooked or a decision must be made without a guarantee of success.
Humour also plays a part. Serious subjects often become easier to consider when people are given room to recognise themselves in the story.
Speaking and Community Work
Ian is developing presentations for libraries, business groups, community organisations and churches.
His general presentations focus on courage, leadership, decision-making, resilience and personal responsibility. His faith-based presentations are prepared specifically for church audiences and reflect his Christian background and speaking experience.
Topics include moving forward without certainty, understanding fear, taking the next honest step and leading when every answer is not available.
Each presentation is designed to leave people with something practical they can use after the room has emptied and normal life has resumed.
Continuing to Write
Alongside Forward Anyway, Ian continues to write about leadership, personal strength and the behaviour of people in positions of influence.
His work examines what it means to remain calm, observant and principled in rooms where pressure, ego and uncertainty are present.
At the centre of his writing and speaking is one consistent message.
You do not need to know everything before you begin.
You do not need to remove every fear.
You do not need everyone to agree with you.
You need enough courage to take the next honest step.
Then, when the moment arrives, move forward anyway.
